The formation of the national intellectual property protection system in the Republic of Armenia started in January, 1992 with the creation of the Patent Department under the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the National Copyright Agency in December, 1993. Later, in March, 2002 the Intellectual Property Agency was created by the merger of these two bodies, which operated within the Ministry of Economic Development and Investments of the Republic of Armenia. In the same year, the government approved the charter of the agency, which established the structure of the agency.
Later, on July 26, 2021, the Intellectual Property Agency was renamed the Intellectual Property Office. The new charter of the Intellectual Property Office of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, which preserved all the functions assigned to the Office, was approved by the No. 786-L Decision of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia. Currently, the legal framework in the field of intellectual property in the Republic of Armenia is regulated by laws, by-laws, as well as international treaties of the Republic of Armenia.
The Republic of Armenia has been a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) since 1993 and the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO) since 1996. The office cooperates with the European Patent Organization (EPO), and other international and regional structures and agencies of foreign countries.
Every month, the Office publishes the official newsletter "Industrial Property" in Armenian and Russian, which is published on the official website of the Intellectual Property Office.
The Office also publishes full descriptions of patented inventions.
Within the framework of the agreement signed in Moscow between Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, the Russian Federation, and the Eurasian Patent Office "On the Issuance of Patent Information of Regional Joint Products on Compact Discs", bibliographic data on inventions are published in Armenian, Russian and English.
The results of the Office's activities are summarized in annual reports published in Armenian, Russian, and English.
